Abrasive stages, honing and stropping

More stages are not automatically better. What matters is whether each supplied abrasive has a known purpose and whether the package includes the finish you want. A coarse abrasive can establish or repair an edge; a finer surface can refine it; a ceramic hone or strop may be used for a later step depending on the exact system. Manufacturers do not use grit labels identically across every material, so do not treat two different abrasives with similar numbers as guaranteed equivalents.

Read the included-items list literally

Distinguish included surfaces from compatible accessories, replacement parts and bundle contents. A strop listed in a separate accessory section is not automatically part of the base kit. A model family may sell a simple package and an Elite or Pro package with a longer abrasive progression or different construction. Check the exact SKU, package contents and current manual before choosing.

Choose a progression for the job

A damaged or dull edge may require more work than a maintained edge. A coarse surface can remove more material, so it is not a default touch-up choice simply because it is included. Work Sharp's Precision Adjust manual assigns its 320-grit diamond plate to shaping, 600-grit diamond to sharpening and the fine ceramic stone to honing; it also describes using only the ceramic for frequent touch-ups when appropriate. Those instructions are product-specific examples, not a universal grit chart.

Plan replacement and cleaning

Find out whether an abrasive can be replaced separately, whether replacements remain available, and what cleaning method and lubricant are allowed. The Precision Adjust guide says to use the system dry and not use oil or water while sharpening. Other sharpeners may require water or another care routine. Use the exact manual rather than transferring care instructions from a different sharpener or abrasive material.

Do not chase a polished-looking finish at the cost of a blade's geometry. The right progression is the one supported by the system instructions and appropriate for the knife's intended edge.
