Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone System review

The LKCLX expands the manual controlled-angle line to five hones: extra-coarse 70, coarse 120, medium 280, fine 600 and ultra-fine ceramic 1,000 grit, with clamp, rods, honing oil and case. The extra-coarse and ultra-fine ends extend the task range beyond the three-hone Standard kit.

A useful fit for

Consider the LKCLX when you want the Lansky clamp workflow but need a wider documented grit progression than the Standard kit, including a coarse re-profiling stone and a fine ceramic finish.

The main tradeoff

Five hones add steps and storage, not faster setup. The exact angle markings remain discrete, their convention is unstated, and the kit has no dedicated serrated hone or leather strop; do not treat the general burr-removal instruction as serration sharpening.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What is actually different from the Standard 3-Stone System?

The LKCLX adds a 70-grit extra-coarse hone for re-profiling and a 1,000-grit ceramic ultra-fine hone around 120/280/600 steps. That is a broader grit sequence, not a powered or automatic system; it retains the same manual clamp-and-rod method.

Can it sharpen serrations out of the box?

The exact five-hone list does not include the dedicated 800-grit serrated hone supplied with the Universal and Professional kits. The general finishing note only discusses removing burrs from the non-sharpened side; for actual serration work, confirm the appropriate separately sold hone and its instructions.

What care does this package require?

The page and included-product image show honing oil for its non-diamond hones. Lansky distinguishes oil care for standard hones from the no-oil, brush-and-water cleaning used for its diamond plates. Follow the exact hone directions instead of applying one maintenance routine to every kit.

Are the angle marks a bevel recommendation?

No: the system lists 17°, 20°, 25° and 30° clamp marks but the text checked does not define whether a mark is per side or inclusive. Select only after checking the blade maker’s intended geometry and recognize the narrow angle does not decide whether that edge is durable for your use.

The Lansky Deluxe 5-Stone System (LKCLX) adds both a more aggressive starting stone and a finer finishing stage to the company’s manual clamp-and-rod format. Its five listed hones range from 70 to 1,000 grit, while the standard LKC03 stops at 120 and 600. This assessment uses the exact manufacturer package list and instructions, not personal use, ownership or test results. See the LKCLX product page and the maker’s FAQ.

Where the extra two stones matter

The LKCLX package lists extra-coarse 70, coarse 120, medium 280 and fine 600 alumina-oxide hones, plus an ultra-fine 1,000-grit ceramic hone. The 70-grit face extends the progression toward heavy reconditioning; the 1,000-grit ceramic adds a finishing step after the ordinary coarse-to-fine sequence. The kit also includes the multi-angle knife clamp, guide rods, honing oil and a case. Compared with LKC03, the useful difference is not simply “two more stones”: it is access to distinct ends of the sharpening progression.

The exact list does not include the dedicated serrated hone that appears in Lansky’s Universal and Professional packages, nor a leather strop. The ceramic ultra-fine hone is an abrasive surface, not a leather strop. If either specialty is essential, verify the exact SKU rather than buying by the Deluxe name.

Clamp angles and blade positioning

The kit uses four marked positions—17°, 20°, 25° and 30°—rather than continuous adjustment. Lansky’s copy describes broad use cases for those marks, including delicate fillet-style edges at 17°, kitchen/slicing knives around 20°, durable hunting/outdoor edges around 25°, and heavy-duty cutting around 30°. Those examples are not universal edge prescriptions. The current product copy does not define per-side versus inclusive angle convention, so do not equate the label with a measured bevel without checking the knife maker’s geometry.

The maker’s setup guidance is also important to fit. For shorter blades it centers the clamp and has the user turn the knife to work the other side. For blades over seven inches it recommends multiple short sections with the clamp repositioned between zones. A fixed clamp-and-rod workflow can be deliberate and repeatable, but it requires setup, careful strokes, and a blade shape that can be secured in the jaws.

Oil, storage and buying checks

The package lists honing oil and the stones are Lansky’s standard/ceramic sequence, not the dry-use diamond plates sold in separate kits. Follow the care directions for the exact hone material; do not transfer a diamond kit’s brush-and-dry instructions to a stone kit. The case stores the kit components, but the optional bench mount is not listed as part of this package. Confirm that an offer is the five-stone LKCLX system and that the 70, 120, 280, 600 and ceramic 1,000 hones are actually included.

Fit summary

Shortlist LKCLX when the manual guided format is acceptable and the expanded grit range is useful for the intended kitchen or pocket/outdoor knives. Its clearest advantage over the three-stone system is the 70-grit starting option and the ceramic 1,000-grit finish. It remains a hand-operated clamp system, does not document scissors support, and does not have an included serration hone or leather strop. The page does not promise fit for every knife length, thickness or handle design; for a long blade, follow the zone-by-zone setup and check clamp clearance first.
