A useful fit for

Consider WSGFS221 if you want a compact manual system with straight-edge and dedicated serration methods, several included surfaces, and a strop; it has no clamp and its 20°/25° marks are discrete positions.

The main tradeoff

It asks the user to control the blade and holder by hand, and the numeric finder does not represent its discrete guide positions as a continuous angle range. The standard package has 220/600 diamond only, no case or scissor fixture, and the maker's page contains a 200-versus-220 grit wording inconsistency.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the exact WSGFS221 package include a leather strop?

Yes. The manufacturer box list names a leather strop. Its shared user guide says to keep the leather clean and lightly oil it when dry; the separate GFS Elite package adds extra diamond plates and a zippered case.

Can the Guided Field Sharpener address a serrated edge?

The package includes a separate ceramic serration rod. The shared user guide says to choose a rod size that suits the scallops, match the serration bevel and use short strokes for each scallop; this is not a flat-plate or numeric-angle method.

Can the listed 20° and 25° guides satisfy an exact-angle filter?

The maker lists discrete guide positions: the manual labels 20° for diamond sharpening and 25° for ceramic honing/stropping. They are not a continuous 20°–25° range, so the numeric match rule is deliberately left unsupported for this model.

Where this exact model fits

The Work Sharp Guided Field Sharpener is a hand-operated, portable sharpening block rather than a clamped bench system or a powered belt machine. The US product page identifies SKU WSGFS221. Its package list names coarse 220- and fine 600-grit diamond plates, a ceramic rod with a fish-hook groove, a separate ceramic serration sharpener, a leather strop and a broadhead wrench. That is a useful set of functions for someone who wants several edge-maintenance stages in a compact format, but it is not a promise that every blade geometry or tool will fit every surface.

The central buying question is less about the word “field” than about how you will hold the tool and the knife. The manufacturer's manual says to hold the sharpener by its handle or put it on a flat, stable surface; it warns against resting it on yourself. There is no clamp that fixes a blade in place, so the user supplies the control, pressure and stroke. A buyer who wants a rigidly clamped edge guide should compare this with the Precision Adjust, while one seeking a smaller folding form can look at the Folding Field Sharpener.

Two angle guides are not a continuous range

Work Sharp lists 20° and 25° guides. The manual labels the diamond-plate sharpening guide at 20° and the ceramic honing and leather-stropping guides at 25°. That difference matters: a guide on this tool helps repeat the motion, but it does not create a dial that can be set to any value between 20° and 25°. Our numeric finder therefore does not claim a continuous angle range for this model. It leaves the required-angle filter unanswered unless a future platform can faithfully test discrete positions.

Even when one of the two guides is available, it is only a capability check. It is not a recommendation to change the knife's existing bevel. Check the knife maker's guidance and the intended edge convention before taking metal off an edge. Serrations use a separate small ceramic rod; the manual says to select a rod size that suits the scallops and follow their bevel. It does not assign a single numeric setting to every serrated knife.

A useful progression, with package-specific limits

The listed 220- and 600-grit diamond plates, ceramic surfaces and leather strop create more than one route through the kit. The manual presents the coarse diamond as a tool for chips, angle changes or sharpening other tools, and says that ordinary touch-ups may need only the fine ceramic and/or leather after the first sharpening. Those are maker instructions for this product, not a universal sequence for every steel or edge. The coarse plate is not automatically the right first step for routine maintenance.

The maker's page has a small internal grit discrepancy: the in-box list and specification table say 220 and 600, while one promotional sentence says “200 and 600.” For this assessment the package and manual's 220 marking are the stronger exact-item evidence; confirm the markings on the seller's current package rather than inferring a different plate. Replacement diamond plates are listed separately by the manufacturer, so verify that the exact replacement matches this model before ordering one.

Serrations and field extras

This package does document a ceramic serration rod and gives a serration-specific method. That is a real distinction from a flat plate-only system, but it still requires the user to work scallop by scallop and to choose the rod size and angle for the knife. The included broadhead wrench is an accessory for adjusting broadheads; its presence does not mean the abrasive surfaces are a dedicated broadhead-sharpening jig. The basic package also differs from the Guided Field Sharpener Elite: the Elite listing adds 400- and 800-grit diamond plates and a zippered case, while retaining the same main 20°/25° guide positions and serration-oriented components.

Care and handling shape ownership

The user guide says the ceramic rods and sharpener can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap, that the diamond plates can be removed for cleaning, and that the leather strop should be kept clean and lightly oiled when dry. These directions are more involved than wiping down a single replaceable plate, and they differ from dry-only instructions on some other sharpeners. The manual also emphasizes careful hand placement, especially on strokes toward the user. Follow the actual manual and keep the blade under control throughout the stroke.

Who should compare before choosing

Consider WSGFS221 when you value a manual, portable tool with both straight-edge and serration methods, several included surfaces and an included strop. Compare it with the Elite if you need additional diamond stages and a zippered case, or with the Blackout if finish is part of your choice; the latter's published box list matches the standard functional package rather than the Elite's expanded kit. If exact numerical angle adjustment, blade clamping, non-knife tool support or a single replaceable abrasive is essential, this model may not answer the need. Check the exact SKU, box list, guide positions and knife-specific instructions before purchase.
